All-Breed Agility Fun Match by Joanne Williamson
After making several attempts to find a suitable date, the club put on its first agility fun match at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta, NJ on Saturday, July 8. Co-chair of the event, Gail Faherty, arranged for Condit Ford of Newton, NJ to be our sponsor for the fairgrounds fee. The weather
was nothing short of magnificent- bright and sunny, in the low 80's, but not at all humid. One hundred dogs of all breeds were pre-entered, including twelve Beardies, and during the course of the day, participated in over 220 training runs at the AKC Excellent, Open, or Novice levels.
All of the club members who attended worked extremely hard to keep the match running smoothly: we started the day with set-up at 7 am and it was nearly 9 pm before clean-up was done and we were all on our way home. Lunch had to be fit in on the fly to keep the runs moving. But our efforts were greatly appreciated by the agility community- we were given numerous verbal and e-mail compliments on how much everyone enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and opportunity to work on training problems.
Special thanks are due to non-members Karen and Kurt Bowens, Ruth Henningsen, Jean Owens, Michele Ritter, and Kathy Rupprecht who helped with set-up and/or break down; Robin Shugg's son Eric did a little bit of everything during the day: set up, straightening the chute, fixing bars, counting the table, and cleaning up afterwards. And when it was all over, the treasury was some $1300 richer due to everyone's efforts!
