First Aid

At a recent Twin Brooks Kennel Club meeting, Kirk M. La Pierre, Owner and Cheif A.C.O of A1 Saver Emergency Animal Services, was a guest speaker on Animal First Aid.  He recommended taking a child/infant CPR class (similar rhythm for dogs) and a first aid class.  He gave us a list of items to make up our own doggie first aid kit:

YOUR PET FIRST AID KIT

  1. PLASTIC BOX - for storing all the first aid items
  2. BANDAGE SCISSORS
  3. RECTAL THERMOMETER
  4. LONG TWEEZERS or HEMOSTAT (or both - the hemostat, with padded ends, can be used to close up a wound quickly or if the dog is unconscious, it can be used to pull the tongue out and hold it out of the mouth to keep the airway open)
  5. SMALL FLASHLIGHT - for checking the eyes, ears, etc.
  6. 4"X4" GAUZE PADS (sponges)
  7. TWO ROLLS OF STERILE GAUZE (self cling)
  8. ONE ROLL OF ADHESIVE BANDAGE TAPE
  9. VELCRO STRAP or a ROLL OF NON STERILE GAUZE or a MUZZLE that fits your pet  in the event of serious injury, a muzzle might be needed to keep your pet from accidently injuring you....and if you're injured, you won't be able to help your pet)
  10. WOODEN TONGUE DEPRESSORS
  11. ONE INSTANT ICE PACK  (keep 4 during summer months) put these into a zip lock bag as they sometimes break open easily
  12. TWO ZIP LOCK BAGS  (for collecting vomit and/or stools should the dog do either of these ... the sample might be useful by the Vet you take your pet to)
  13. A TUBE OF QUICK STOP or a STYPTIC STICK
  14. LATEX EXAM GLOVES  (2 or more pairs)
  15. YOUR PET INFORMATION card taped to the inside top of  the box (your name/address, vet name/address, pet name, date of birth, species, etc.  ... in the event of an emergency this information is readily available)
  16. PAD and PEN for taking notes when checking the condition of the pet at the scene.

He also recommended carrying a blanket or sheet and a 3'x1' 1/2" plywood board.  In the case of a severe injury the animal can be carried on the board and the blanket/sheet used under the board to secure the dog to the board in a papoose. And when you travel or go to shows with your dog, make sure you have a cooler with COLD water for your dog so that in the event of over heating, you'll be able to cool your dog off immediately
